About CTFC Summer Clerkships
The California Tribal Families Coalition (CTFC) is a nonprofit social welfare membership organization that is led by a Board of Directors comprised of elected tribal leaders. CTFC was formed to carry out the recommendations of the California ICWA Compliance Task Force Report, to seek compliance of the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA), and to further the goals of Indian tribes as they relate to tribal families. The mission of CTFC is to promote and protect the health, safety and welfare of tribal children and families, which are inherent tribal governmental functions and are at the core of tribal sovereignty and tribal governance.
CTFC provides an opportunity for summer law clerks with demonstrated interest in Indian law and/or social welfare law and policy. The 2023 Summer Clerkships will be primarily remote, but may include an opportunity to meet in-person in Northern California with the CTFC team. The 2023 Summer Clerkships are paid positions dependent on resources and experience. The start and end dates for the 2023 Summer Clerkships are flexible, but the positions must be no less than 10 weeks between May 15, 2023, and September 8, 2023. Law clerks work 32 hours per week. CTFC may also support clerks seeking class credit for externships.
Candidates are preferably rising 3Ls, however, 2Ls with relevant experience prior to or while in law school will be considered. It is helpful if candidates have completed advanced research, writing, and a clinical placement.
The 2023 Summer Clerkship projects will vary. Past projects have included drafting state court briefs, research and writing an opposition to appellate case de-publication, developing training materials on state law, and drafting legal and policy strategy for legislation. We seek to have the clerkship result in an excellent writing sample and involve opportunities for oral advocacy.
The CTFC team focuses on high impact work, community driven needs identification with a focus on high needs stakeholders. We are looking for engaged and driven individuals that thrive in a collaborative environment, seek mentorship and learning and enjoy creative problem-solving. Native law students are strongly encouraged to apply. Applications will be accepted until November 6, 2022.
